Meaning ‘melting’ and ‘fusing’ in Chinese, Rong is a gallery in Hangzhou, China, celebrating innovative experiments with traditional Chinese materials and techniques. With a collection of traditional Chinese handicrafts, Rong creates a collaborative workspace for contemporary artists to inherit traditional artisan spirit and subvert the ordinary crafted forms.

Inspired by the notion of deconstruction and reconstruction, the identity system fuses the form of Chinese characters with new materials of contemporary arts to explore the potential of utilizing modern design to rejuvenate traditional cultures.

Rong means melting and fusing in Chinese. By deconstructing Chinese characters and reconstructing them with different content and materials, the identity system explores new possibilities between traditional handicrafts and contemporary design.

To enlarge the experience of exploring traditional handicrafts, the hypothetical brand Rong includes four sub-brand, Rong Residence, Rong Library, Rong Exhibition, and Rong Workshop.

The postcard series demonstrate Rong provides an engaging experience, allowing visitors to get information from the research-based library, learn to deconstruct and reconstruct from the exhibition, experiment with materials and techniques from the workshop, and relax and feel the beauty of handcrafts in residence.

The booklet provides a unique introduction to the Rong spirit. Rong builds a relaxing and slow-living space with traditional materials and techniques in modern society, allowing visitors to observe the beauty of nature, feel the inner cycle between life and crafts and find physical and mental roots.

Rong, is a cycle, one that starts from handcrafts and lasts to contemporary design. By deconstructing traditional handcrafts and reconstructing contemporary designs, Rong creates a collaborative community that focuses on inheriting traditional spirit and subverting crafted forms. Visitors are able to feel the forms of life, get nourished and find physical and spiritual roots in Rong.
